The Valentine Trick

See this happy child...

.... don't let that sweet smile fool you.......she's a tricky one.

I'll tell you why.

This is my 7 year old daughter (in her new glasses) with her Valentine box she and I have made. A few days ago she came home from school saying that she needed to get a box and decorate it for holding Valentines for her class party next Monday.

You might think all you need is some stickers, makers, etc., but you'd be wrong. No, my Kendyl needed to have it be in the shape of something incredible... so we brain stormed about ideas of what to do with a box to make it fun and creative. Some of her ideas included R2D2 with real light up knobs, a car, pirate treasure box, a mailbox, and on and on until the glorious idea of Princess Rapunzel's tower. We already had the Rapunzel Barbie so all we needed was a cardboard cylinder and some spray paint. We had all the other fixins in different bins of craftiness. :0)

So after 3 hours yesterday of spray painting, cutting, gluing, making curtains, cutting out stones, adding trims and wood dowels, making a flag, and adding extentions to Rapunzel's already long hair the castle tower was complete. (Please don't ask why I have so much crap in my crafty bins).

We even found a little red bird to glue below Rapunzel's window.

We made it so the top tower could open to remove Rapunzel and the bottom part of the tower was a completely different container to keep the Valentines in. Through the back is the slot for putting the Valentines in or you can remove the bottom lid to put extra big candy in. (Kendyl is hoping this has to be removed a lot) :)

There was much celebrating last night in the wonder-fulness of such a tower.

The celebrating continued in the morning as my little Kendyl Fairy danced around her tower in delight.

So why is my daughter such a stinker you ask?

Because when I handed it to her to take to school this morning she looked at me sheepishly and admitted that she was just suppose to bring a plain old box to school and the class would be decorating them there with the teachers supplies! I was a little dumbfounded at first thinking I understood her wrong. She comforted me by saying that it was okay that her box was so wonderful because now she'll have the best box in the class while everyone else's has to be plain, that she would be the most famous, and isn't that good news?

U-hem, excuse me?
(I think she's been reading too many Junie B. Jone's Books)

*sigh*

Oh well, I'd be lying if I didn't admit to how much fun it was to make. :0) Oh my sneaky Kendyl.

lol. In some ways it makes me sad schools have gone to the trend of making boxes/bags at school. I remember one classmates' Valentine box that was a robot complete with lights - if you squeezed two wires together, the nose would light up with a little red bulb. But I am lucky I have boys. I have no bins full of such marvels as to make such a beautiful box! It looks truly amazing, and I think she just wanted to be featured on your awesome blog...
